Garr Reynolds at Duarte Design

Thursday I went to a happy hour event at Duarte Design to see Garr Reynolds present some of the ideas from his upcoming new book, The Naked Presenter.

Garr's Presentation Zen is one of my favorite books on presentation and design. So I didn't want to miss the chance to meet him and see his presentation. It was great to meet Garr and see some friends there as well. His presentation was outstanding. Plus, luckily I won the prize - a cool Presentation Zen "bento box" full of creative stuff and videos!

I also got a sneek peek at Nancy Duarte's upcoming book: Resonate. I've attended Nancy's Slide:ology workshop and love her approach to crafting compelling presentations. Resonate is going to go into depth on one of my favorite parts of the class - creating a compelling "story" for your presentation. I pre-ordered this one - it looks great.

Chicago visit

I haven't been to Chicago for a long time. I forgot what a beautiful city it is.

There was an awesome thunderstorm for the entire first night I was there. I kind of miss these; I grew up in Michigan and t-storms are pretty rare where I live now in California.

Chicago was great and I can't wait to go back again. I put together this little movie on my iPhone using the iMovie app.

Yelp is showing check-ins on your reviews now

Now Yelp is doing "check-ins" like Foursquare and Gowalla.

I checked in at Morocco's in San Jose the other night using my iPhone, and then left a review a few days later. Yelp shows on the review how many times you've checked in to the business. Kinda cool.

Man, I really want one of these

I have always wanted a Bobcat. I'm not sure why. I mean, wouldn't it be cool driving that bad boy around and digging stuff up??

Maybe it goes back to being a kid and playing with trucks and tractors. I talked to a friend in college who said he and some buddies went to a construction site and drove the tractors around one night. I wish I had done that back when I could get away with it ;)

Ah well, maybe one day!

From the Apple ][+ to the iPod Touch - a bicycle for your mind...

My oldest daughter just turned 11 and she's been saving to get her very own iPod Touch. She's been pretty persistent, and even did the research on the parental controls to convince me that it would be safe for her to use.

She finally convinced me and my wife to let her get one. We ordered it on Amazon to save her $20 plus tax (that's right, they normally cost $199 but you can pick one up on Amazon for less than $180)

It came in the mail the other day. Just watching her discover all the amazing apps available (mostly games) reminds me of my first computer. When I was a kid I got a hold of an Apple ][+ and was sucked into a whole new world. I played these amazing games, traded games with my friends, and learned how to program it. It was absolutely awesome.

And now I see my daughter experiencing the same thing, but with a way more powerful device that fits in the palm of her hand.

Like Steve Jobs said:
"What a computer is to me is it's the most remarkable tool that we've ever come up with, and it's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds."

I received this note from my 8-year old daughter today

Apparently she is in need of some cash :)
